Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry
A Review By: VJJ
Zuri’s hair has a mind of its own. It kinks, coils, and curls every which way. Zuri knows it’s beautiful. When Daddy steps in to style it for an extra special occasion, he has a lot to learn. But he LOVES his Zuri, and he’ll do anything to make her - and her hair - happy. Tender and empowering, Hair Love is an ode to loving your natural hair - and a celebration of daddies and daughters everywhere.

This story is about a bonding and teaching moment for father and daughter about hair care.
This story was a sweet ode to little Black girls with hair that has a mind of its own especially when they attempt to comb it themselves and fail. We all know that combing our hair is a process and Zuri wanted her hair special for her mom’s arrival, but it took her allowing her dad to show her how. I love that Zuri spends time with her dad in this tender moment. They both are unsure, but she trusts him to help her and together they tame Zuri’s wild tresses. Zuri’s dad was so careful and patient when combing her thick coils the way her mommy does. He makes it fun, shows Zuri the proper hair care products to give her hair love, and together with no fuss, they make Zuri the prettiest little girl just in time for mom. Zuri understands her hair is made from love from both mom and dad and that not only moms can comb their daughters’ hair, dads can too.
I loved that this was a bonding moment between father and daughter. This was a cute story little girls will enjoy and we need more stories like this teach girls to love their hair.
Blue Ivy did an exceptional job performing this narration, adding so much personality to the characters.
