I Love My Hair, I Love Me by Christine Bolton

A Review By: SS

This children’s audiobook was inspired by the little African American girls in my family and the experiences and challenges they face on the schoolyard and classrooms. Young African American girls are lead to believe that they are inferior to other races, and this audiobook is meant to inspire and lift them up. Young African American girls are often ridiculed for having different hair. They are asked many questions from other children, and they need to be lifted and honored for their heritage. It is my hope that other kids of different backgrounds could learn from the words written in this audiobook and come to realize that we are all made in the image of God almighty, and he loves us all just the way we are.

This is an adorable story of a little girl, Sam, who is in love with her hair. She has great pride in everything from the texture to the color and every other detail she can think of. Listening to Sam describe her hair and heritage with such fondness will help teach children to love and accept his/her own hair as an important part of who he/she is.

I loved how Sam described her hair with pride. Not only did she describe the “curls” that she loves so much, she also spoke of her heritage and how she came to have such thick, strong hair. I loved how the narrator used the voice of a small child. It really felt like a little girl was telling the story.
