Mr. Loverman by Bernardine Evaristo

A Review By: JQ

Barrington Jedidiah Walker is 74 and leads a double life. Born and bred in Antigua, he's lived in Hackney, London, for years. A flamboyant character with a fondness for William Shakespeare, Barrington is a husband, father, grandfather - and also secretly gay.

His deeply religious and disappointed wife, Carmel, thinks he sleeps with other women. When their marriage goes into meltdown, Barrington wants to divorce Carmel and live with Morris, but after a lifetime of fear and deception, will he manage to break away?

With an abundance of laugh-out-loud humor and wit, Mr. Loverman explodes cultural myths and shows the extent of what can happen when people fear the consequences of being true to themselves.

This wonderful book is a historical fiction tale, beginning in Antigua 1963.

Barrington marries Carmel and together they leave the West Indies to embark on life together in London. The author does a great job of drawing the reader into the complicated relationship between Barrington and wife Carmel. We learn that Barrington is gay and in love with his best friend and using his wife as beard. Even though Barrington is a likeable MC we can't miss what his wife is going through. This book made me look at the heartbreak that occurs when we practice being other than who we truly are.

I recommend this book because it takes you on a journey not only with the MCs, but with society as a whole.

If you can read this book without judgement, you will see how we all play a part in these types of painful scenarios.

Both narrators did a wonderful job.

Great book!
