The Love Prison Made and Unmade: My Story by Ebony Roberts
A Review By: T
When I started this memoir, I was not expecting such transparency from the author. We get to know a little about Ebony's life before her life changes in a major way. We learn that she is an intelligent and educated woman. I must point out that education does not always equal intelligence. While volunteering at a prison Ebony met and felt a strong connection to an inmate who was a convicted murderer. We see stories of women falling in love and often being used by men in prison. We can't fathom being so naive. That is how I felt before reading this book. I understand how she fell in love with Shaka when everything in her probably told her to run the other way. This was a story told with honesty and vulnerability. She shared things that I would only share with my closest friends and family. That must have taken an enormous amount of strength and courage. She shared the good, the bad, and the ugly. Relationships are hard when both people are free. Imagine the strain on a relationship when your partner is behind bars. When and if they come home from prison, how do you navigate this newness? What sacrifices would you be willing to make for love? I don't think that you have to agree with the path she took, but I feel you will understand the reasons behind some of her choices. I really enjoyed this book, and the narrator brought the words to life beautifully. I thank the author for sharing her story.

This book is about an unconventional relationship. Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected place.
The narrator allowed me to relate to Ebony while sharing her ups and downs in life and in her relationship with Shaka. I felt like I was travelling to visit my man in prison.
